Navin Dev's short film THE TREE MAN has won the Jury Prize for Best Short Film at the Time Out Critics Choice PUPPETS ON FILM FESTIVAL at the Little Angel Theatre on the 26th of March.

Synopsis: Dark interpretation of Carlo Collodi’s classic novel ‘The Adventures of Pinocchio’, depicting Pinocchio’s seemingly final minutes as he hangs from a tree.

Navin's excellent attention to detail when working with puppets, precise direction given to us as actors - gave confidence in the final quality of the film. So proud to have puppeteered in this. He has a feature in post production called Red Kingdom Rising

You are invited to attend a night of new work and work in progress, fresh from some of the most exciting emerging companies in UK puppetry.

Annie Brooks gives you Colossal Crumbs: an undulating, handmade world provides a warm playground for faceless individuals, whose honest spirits are only acknowledged by their silent presence.
Annie will also be treating the audience to her latest work in development (TBC).

Raven Kaliana and Puppet (R)Evolution presents a short film based on the critically acclaimed adult puppet theatre piece, Hooray for Hollywood.
This follows with a scene from a new piece, Fragile/Sacred: showing a human life pushed beyond its breaking point, exploring themes of hope, belonging, reconstruction, and transcendence.

Unpacked will be presenting a smoking cabaret of songs, stories and surprises. A grotesque and mysterious puppet character leads her crew around the world as a ragged circus outfit.

'The Litter Birds' is a story written by Sara Kirkpatrick about two cheeky magpies.
It is very interactive and silly, features puppetry, original live music and encourages environmental awareness.

The promo video showing the Pirate Ship Lantern I designed and made.

Commissioned by The Stables Theatre in Oct 09 to promote their Christmas Show.

It was carried by three people, and when carried reached 14ft up into the air.

I arranged a workshop with some local school children who helped decorate it once I had created the main structure.

Hooray For Hollywood

Hooray For Hollywood rehearsals are underway and despite severe funding set backs the show is coming together beautifully.

It is a delicate and tragic tale told from the child's vantage point and is based on autobiographical material from the life of Raven Kaliana - writer and director of Hooray For Hollywood.

I am the main puppeteer on Sylvia, the little girl puppet, which I operate by myself and when scenes permit with the support of one or two others. This is bunraku style puppetry as practiced by Blind Summit and Handspring

With in-kind support from The Puppet Centre Trust, The BAC and Childline.

It will be appearing at Central Puppet Festival in London on May 08th!

HeArt Stopping Theatre

As part of Interaction's 'Art Monday's' and half term workshop series they got me to devise, make and perform two pieces of theatre in 9 hours.

Two groups of local kids were involved and we used 'Eco Awareness' as our theme.

The younger group delved straight into story

writing and sketching. They produced a crazy sto

ry of an adventure.

The older group were more interested in politics and debating. They brought up things like Al Gore's 'The Inconvenient Truth'. So they wrote a piece about politics and voting.

Lots of humour and slapstick in two very individual pieces written by the kids, directed by me with sound design by Matt Isaac!

Sir John Dankworth passed away on the 6th of Feb 2010 the same day as The Stables celebrated it's 40th anniversary. Cleo Laine performed and announced his death during the concert.

Many thanks to Monica Ferguson for suggesting the Lantern Project and all at The Stables.

Lots of love to Matt Isaac for asking to be involved and not going home when told and for being a genius in all respects.

On the day the lantern was carried by Matt, Graeme Surtees and Sandy Payne. They were followed by an eager bunch of pirates made up of Michael Falconer, Sylvia Jones, Fiona Lockwood, Louie and Alby Cerisola.

I am producing a Lantern for Stables Theatre.

It is to be a Pirate Ship and will appear at Stony Stratford Lantern Parade

We did a workshop today involving St Mary's School in Wavendon who helped decorate the lantern.

Here are some of the drawings from my sketchbook.. I will post the finished pics up in a week or so when the lantern is completed and lit!

Last year I manipulated a marionette built by Toni Sinnett for an Independant short film by Navin Dev.
Set between Chapters 15 and 16 of Carlo’s Collodi’s classic novel 'The Adventures of Pinocchio', 'The Tree Man' depicts Pinocchio’s seemingly final minutes as he hangs from a tree. As he slowly dies, the wooden marionette spiritually journeys into an inferno of fear, guilt and hope through his encounters with key symbolic characters such as the Maiden with Azure Hair and the ghost of the Talking Cricket. As he falls deeper into darkness he learns the crucial dangers and virtues of the mortality he seeks.

I recently worked with Interaction and SoundBeam and a group of children with behavioural difficulites and disabilities in order to explore the story telling capabilities of SoundBeam.

We retold some well know stories and also wrote original stories which were then performed in The Old Rectory Gardens at Interaction to an invited audience. They also learnt about how soundbeam works and how to create unique sounds.

FERAL AT THE BAC 2009

Feral appeared at the BAC's New Year New Spaces. Now reworked to be in a contemporary setting with the initiating question 'Why would a boy want to be a cat?'.

It is the story of an ex teacher and an ex pupil (the pupil suffers from agoraphobia amongst other conditions and has a compulsion to be a cat).

Fantastically visually with ground breaking puppetry.

Other companies to appear in New Year New Spaces include 1927 the group behind BAC's current christmas show, The Devil and The Deep Blue Sea, and Will Adamsdale who was working on his next installment of his Perrier Award winning show Jackson's Way.

Past successes of the BAC's scratch program include Jerry Springer - The Opera and Punchdrunk's Masque of The Red Death.

International Film Festival. It has been doing the festival rounds including Cannes.

John Dankworth adds to the Jam!

This is a day at The National Youth Music Camps.

I have the pleasure to be a part of these camps.

Today, the legend that is Sir John Dankworth visited us!!

John Dankworth and Cleo Laine set up The Stables in 1969 in their back garden. They still live in the same house virtually on the site of the theatre.

He joined in with a jazz lesson today, his energy, enthusiasm, manner and musicianship are inspirational. He seems to always have a smile or joke on his lips if its not his sax.

The National Youth Music Camps

Wow, Wish i'd known about these when I was a young-un!

They were started by Avril Dankworth in 1970 and still retain that traditional camp atmosphere. I've been lucky enough to work on these and meet lots of the amazing and talented staff, and work at The Stables Theatre where the camps have been running since they were born.

I feel very lucky to be involved in these camps with the amazing people who work on them and the talented focussed young people who attend them. Hopefully my musical skills will get better just by being around them all!

Suzi Moonface

Still in early phase of development this arts council funded project led by Lowri James; (who is embarking on her pioneer turn at directing) a piece called Suzi Moonface and the Stolen Babies, which she has conceived.

Suzi Moonface is a dark adult fairy tale using puppetry and telling a story in silence using clown.

We spent three weeks split between Oval House Theatre and Camden Peoples Theatre studying with Rene Baker and Jonathan Young and devising around the story Lowri has had written by actor/writer Piers Wehner.

Second phase of the project is in planning stages.

My New Shed

This is my lovely shed which i've been working on for sometime.

Its a whopping 5 metres by 3 metres! And i've built lots of big shelves for all my circus equipment and a work bench to make puppets and stuff on hopefully! I also took the old shed door off and put on a proper door with a window in it.

I'll post more photos of its interior soon enough

(as it needs a bit of a tidy!)

Pinocchio

I recently was asked to manipulate a marionette in a film version of the original story of Pinocchio. The marionettes were built by the marvellous Tony Sinnett who has made many that have been featured on high profile productions.

I manipulated The Burnt Marrionette and assisted Tony with Pinocchio on The Tree Man produced by Navin Dev Films.
